Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
Born in Capriglia Irpina, Ravenna’s citizen for love of mosaic.
He is one of the leading artists of the international contemporary mosaic art. In 1984 he broke with the traditional forms of mosaic, proposing the artistic movement A-Ritmismo.
The niArt Gallery was founded in 2005.
In his artistic career, Nittolo has renewed the vocabulary and syntax of the mosaic. His tesserae, a basic unit, are cut into new shapes: triangular, rounded, irregular. They develop a very often oblique, regular trends broken by long tesserae, which occupy two rows, sometimes interrupted to leave space for reverberations of curved lead sheets, or for decontextualised and out-of-scale insertions. His most recent works are focused on the theme of absence. In these, the mosaic, with its materials and structure, is only a trace. A sign of a presence, preceding in time, of a disappearance: an imprint with an evidence similar to that of the photographic negative, recalling Roland Barthes’ famous definitions.
Felice Nittolo moves naturally within numerous expressive possibilities, but in each one his artistic personality remains unchanged. The search for synthesis that sees the mosaic at the centre of every experience and of every orbit.
