Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
It is a mosaic sculpture inaugurated in 2009, on the occasion of the National Women’s Relay against Violence against Women, promoted by the UDI (the Women’s Union Association in Italy), in synergy with the Linea Rosa Anti-Violence Centre and women’s and feminist groups in the city. It was designed by the students of the Liceo Artistico Nervi-Severini and is a bronze, mosaic and mother-of-pearl structure. The flowers are the wild lilies (Pancratium Marittimum), which grow wild in dune and coastal areas and are also depicted in the late antique Byzantine mosaics on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Each flower is dedicated to a woman killed by the hands of those who claimed to love them: Jolanda Consalvo (1934-2001), Barbara Nebulone (1968-2003), Rosalba di Maggio (1964-2005), Khandra Tahallaiti (1966-2006), Dalia Saiani (1976-2007), Adela Simona Andro (1977-2013), Giulia Ballestri (1976-2016), Maria Ballardini (1939-2022).
