Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
In the green area of the Speyer Gardens, a few steps from the station and behind the apse of the basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista, stands the mosaic column Gerusalemme Celeste (lit. Heavenly Jerusalem). The work is inspired by the representations of the holy cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, which can be admired inside the basilicas of San Vitale and Sant’Apollinare in Classe.
These are buildings with precious surfaces, glittering with gold tesserae and sumptuous decorations of mother-of-pearl and gems.
The mosaic sculpture was designed by Enzo Pezzi and realised by the students of the Consorzio Provinciale per la Formazione Professionale of Ravenna.
