History

Just behind the railway station there is the Darsena area. In 1737, a navigable canal, the so-called Candiano Canal (the real name is Corsini Canal, or simply Darsena) was built to connect the historic centre of Ravenna to the Adriatic Sea. The area became a highly productive zone, with numerous industrial buildings.
Between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the Darsena was the city’s true port and prospered until the 1970s, when it was decided to move the port area, leaving many factories disused.
Today, the Darsena is a lively and beloved place: an open-air museum of industrial archaeology and street art. It is also a place of enjoyment – thanks to cocktail bars and restaurants – and offers a quay for strolling, enhanced by benches, trees and decorative plants. This space is made even more fascinating by lecterns, which bring to mind the city of literary greats such as Dante, Byron, D’Annunzio, Montale, Pasolini and Dario Fo, and by installations of street art and contemporary mosaic monuments. At the head of the quay, on the station side, the Moro di Venezia stands out lightly: is the historic boat of entrepreneur Raul Gardini, in 1992 protagonist of the America’s Cup.

Must-see mosaics in this place

L’incontro (lit. The meeting)

Overlooking the Darsena there is a permanent installation dedicated to ex mayor Fabrizio Matteucci, who passed away on 16 February 2020. The work, designed by Silvia Naddeo and created by students of the Academy of Fine Arts, consists of three-dimensional mosaic elements placed on a bench. This affectionate and nostalgic homage portrays objects from Matteucci’s daily life: his leather briefcase, from which the tricolour sash and the tip of a tie peek out; next to it, on two closed notebooks, a cup of coffee waiting to be drunk.

Panchine del dialogo (lit. Dialogue benches)

Along the Darsena promenade are the Panchine del dialogo, a symbol of exchange and encounter between generations and citizens. They are the fruit of an art project implemented by the Municipality of Ravenna with Social Sofa Ltd, a small Dutch community in Tilburg, which aims to stimulate the social recovery of people in economic-social difficulty through art. They are inspired by the colours of Van Gogh and other great artists; two other benches are located in the inner courtyard of Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste, with the entrance on Via Luca Longhi. The students of the Liceo Artistico ‘Nervi-Severini’ in Ravenna made two similar benches along Via Salara in the city centre.
