Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
In 1996, Akomena gained the contract to create the tomb of the great dancer Rudolf Nureyev, designed by architect Ezio Frigerio and coordinated by L’Operà in Paris. The work, located in Saint-Geneviève-des-Bois, is inspired by the artist’s favourite kilim carpet and is one of the most important examples of mosaic sculpture.
In 1988 Francesca Fabbri opened Akomena, which quickly became a reference point thanks to collaborations with renowned designers, such as Luigi Serafini, Ugo La Pietra, Riccardo Dalisi, Ugo Marano, Adolfo Natalizi, Gianni Veneziano, Bonetti & Garouste, Ravage, Ettore Sottsass, Ron Arad and Gaetano Pesce.
In 1996, Akomena gained the contract to build the tomb of the great dancer Rudolf Nureyev, designed by architect Ezio Frigerio and coordinated by the Paris Opéra.
Since 2009, Francesca Fabbri has then focused on the creation of mosaic sculptures: ‘Prigione’ was selected by Vittorio Sgarbi and exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2011, and now it can be admired at the MAR-Museo d’Arte in Ravenna.
In 2017, Akomena acquired Teti, also specialising in the creation of small mosaic objects for the tourist market. The most recent collections are the result of a prolific activity that combines design creativity with research and the use of different materials.
