Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
On Saturday 17 January, MAR will host the closing event of the 9th Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic, which will be divided into two main parts.
At 4 p.m., in the museum’s quadriportico, Rizomi, a sound performance curated by Viviana Piraneo, will be held in dialogue with Lisa Martignoni’s work (T)Essere, created in collaboration with Dimensione Mosaico as part of Residenze Musive II.
The performance will feature James André Arevalos, Federica Maglioni and Cristina Meldolesi in an improvised dialogue between sound and mosaic material.
At 5 p.m., there will be a presentation of the catalogues of the solo and parallel exhibitions Shahzia Sikander Breathe | Omar Mismar Studies in mosaics, hosted at Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste in Ravenna.
The two exhibitions explored the role of mosaics in contemporary artistic practices, addressing issues related to identity, politics and social tensions of the present.
During the meeting, the catalogue of Marco De Luca‘s exhibition La superficie dell’anima , held at the Fondazione Cardinale Giacomo Lercaro in Bologna, will also be presented, featuring around 20 works by the artist, one of the leading figures in contemporary mosaic art in Ravenna. His poetics, grafted onto a practice of rare refinement, illuminates expressive territories dominated by an expansive and enveloping spirituality that imbues materials and surfaces.
The presentation of the catalogues will feature speeches by Fabio Sbaraglia, Councillor for Culture and Mosaics of the Municipality of Ravenna, curators Giovanni Gardini, Sabina Ghinassi, Serena Simoni and Daniele Torcellini, artist Marco De Luca, together with Maria Grazia Marini and Roberto Cantagalli.
