Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
Sole Crepuscolo Luna (in English Sun-Twilight-Moon) is a site-specific work, by Marco De Luca, placed in correspondence with three walled-up windows on the façade of a house overlooking the square. The triptych consists of three different subjects. The Sole panel is made up of warm-coloured tesserae, gold, ochre, pink, orange, whose rhythm is broken by small golden triangles that animate the surface. Crepuscolo is formed by deep blues, from which delicate flakes of gold emerge, evoking a starry sky. Luna is formed of greys and silvers, in which the tesserae generate tiny projecting flickers and the interstices reveal the bedding mortar, evoking a silent landscape. The artist’s poetry is expressed through almost imperceptible movements and variations in the use of the tesserae and their format, tools with which the material is transformed through light.
