Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
Since 2015, in the flowery area in front of the main entrance of the Mar-Ravenna Art Museum, stands Roto B, a mosaic sculpture by the Ravenna mosaic artist Marco Bravura.
The structure has a fibreglass core with a diameter of one metre eighty. The appearance is that of a bale of wheat, decontextualised, and therefore more eye-catching and attention-grabbing. To allude to hay, the waste product of the wheat, Bravura inserts thin, elongated glass leminae covered in gold, the precious waste material of the mosaic. He arranges the tesserae, elongated and shining, according to a centrifugal force that gradually generates the form. It wants to be an invitation to reflect on the importance of recycling, to live a more frugal and less wasteful life. It also wants to lead us to look more carefully at what, in our daily lives, we see with distraction. The wheat bales in the fields are true metaphysical sculptures, masterpieces of natural geometry.
