Mausloeum of Galla Placidia
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, built in 425 A.D., with its unique early Christian mosaics, is one of the eight amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city of Ravenna.
It is an installation inaugurated in 2023 and placed on the boundary wall of the former Dante Alighieri barracks, overlooking Via Port’Aurea. It was designed and realised by the Racconti Ravennati collective, composed by the workshops: Annafietta, Barbara Liverani Studio, Dimensione Mosaico, Koko Mosaico, Pixel Mosaico, together with the anti-violence centre Linea Rosa, active for thirty years in the defence of women’s rights. Our Skin consists of 225 terracotta frames that recall a decoration from the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, with three points, like a crown. The mosaic is composed of tesserae in the colours of all possible shades of women’s skin. The flowers, different and arranged with a vertical thrust, are meant to represent the soul that rises and aspires to eternal life. In the city of mosaics, this work celebrates diversity and inclusion. It is also a symbol, visible to all, of the commitment of the volunteers and the administration, who over the years have made it possible to welcome and protect more than 8,500 victim of violence women and their daughters and sons.
