An exciting journey into the life, work and memory of Dante Alighieri. In exposition we can admire the wooden box, found in 1865, which held Dante’s bones. Every day, in front of the Tomb, a Canto from the Divine Comedy is read in the project ‘L’ora che volge il disìo’ – Perpetual Reading of the Divine Comedy, an event open to all.

History

The Museo Dante is on the first floor of the former Franciscan convent near to the tomb of the Poet, in the so-called Zone of Silence. It was founded in 1921, on the occasion of the sixth centenary of Dante Alighieri’s death: desired by the Superintendent Ambrogio Annoni and Corrado Ricci, it collected Dante’s memorabilia donated between 1908 and 1921.
In 2021 it was entirely renovated.
Today it offers an immersive and exciting experience, thanks to impressive multimedia supports. The tour explores Dante’s life, work and allows us to enter, with our senses, into the three Canticles of the Divine Comedy. Readings, images, memorabilia– a visit to the Dante Museum, and the nearby Casa Dante, completes the journey of discovery of the Poet’s places in Ravenna, his last refuge. The light, the splendour, the images of the mosaics in the Ravenna basilicas nourished Dante’s imagination and inspiration.
Some scholars believe that Dante, besides being fascinated by them, was even familiar with mosaics, at least in terms of technique and materials.
Along the stairs of the museum there is a large site-specific work of contemporary mosaic.

Must-see mosaic in this place

Il grande saio (lit. The big Cowl)

It is a 2010 mosaic installation by mosaic artist Paolo Racagni, which pays homage to and unites the Franciscan spirit with the poet Dante. The work is like a large tapestry, with an undulating surface, on which the Tau stands out. The letter of the Greek alphabet Tau, in its shape, recalls the cross of Christ: the Saint of Assisi was devoted to it and also adopted it as the symbol of the Friars Minor. At the bottom, on the right, a section of blue and gold tesserae evokes the stars of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, alluding to the final verse of the Canticle of Hell: ‘…e quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle’ (lit. “and then we emerged to see the stars again”, Canto XXXIV, v.139).
