Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe

Like an apparition the basilica stands isolated, as a testimony to the splendor of the lost city

WHY IT IS A UNESCO HERITAGE SITE
For the first time in Christian art, the mosaics of the apse do not feature the figure of Christ, enthroned or blessing, but the saint to whom the church is dedicated. Also unique is the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor in a unique symbolic representation.

History

The majestic exterior is in simple red bricks. The façade features the narthex –a porticoed area that was intended for the unbaptized – and a tall bell tower built between the 10th and 11th centuries.
The interior is divided into three naves by two rows of 12 columns – they are in precious veined Greek marble and come from the Sea of Marmara. They have splendid capitals with “acanthus leaves moved by the wind.
The mosaics of the apse were illuminated by the light diffused by white marble covering all the interior walls, removed by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, in the first half of the 1400s, to reuse them in the Malatesta Temple in Rimini. The atmosphere today is majestic and dazzling thanks to 53 small windows, and four large windows in the apse, that allow light to diffuse and strike the mosaic surfaces.
It is the most important building of worship in the ancient church of Ravenna, which was second only to Rome. It stands on the burial site of Saint Apollinaris, the city’s first bishop and patron. It was commissioned by Bishop Ursicinus and financed by Julian Argentario (the same as the Basilica of San Vitale) and was consecrated by Bishop Maximianus on May 9, 549.

Must-see mosaics in this place

Saint Apollinaris

Saint Apollinaris welcomes us with open arms, in the ancient prayer position. He wears a white stole over his shoulders and a white robe covered by a chasuble richly decorated with golden bees, symbols of eloquence and laboriousness. The founding father of the church in Ravenna is depicted here praying to God and he is surrounded by twelve sheep or lambs, symbols of the faithful. His position is one of honor, in a heavenly setting, triumphant in divine and natural light. The depiction of the saint, like the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, were executed within the first half of the 6th century, at the height of the Justinian Age.

Mount Tabor Transfiguration

A precious gold cross, decorated with gems and mother-of-pearl, occupies most of the apse. At the intersection of the arms of the cross there is a small medallion, from which Christ’s face appears. Surrounded by 99 stars, Jesus is Principle (Alpha) and End (Omega) of the Universe and is observed by three sheep – they are Peter, James and John. The scene is a symbolic representation of the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, narrated in the Gospels, when Christ manifested Himself as a divine creature, enveloped in Light. The prophets Moses and Elijah, from a sky of gold mosaic tiles streaked with celestial white and pink clouds, watch us and point to the scene. At the highest point we see the hand of God the Father making space between the clouds. It is one of the most unique symbolic depictions in art of all time.

Archangel Michael

On either side of the triumphal arch dominate two panels with the archangels Michael and Gabriel.
Archangel Michael observes us fiercely standing out from a gold background, like a good Heavenly Guardian. He rests his feet on an elevation decorated with gems and mother-of-pearl. He wears military ceremonial clothes – a white robe with a purple chlamys over it, stopped by a buckle with pearls forming a flower, and a gold cloth decorated with fine red embroidery of flowers and animals. In his right hand he clutches a flag crowned with a banner inscribed three times with the Greek word Agiòs, meaning Saint. The shoes are precious, set with pearls, and are similar to those worn by Justinian in the mosaics of San Vitale.

Consignment of Privilegia

Behind Archangel Michael, on the apse wall, stands the scene of the consignment of Privilegia to the church of Ravenna. It depicts the moment of the granting of independence to Reparatus, an envoy of Archbishop Maurus, in 666 AD. In the center we see Emperor Constantine IV Pogonatus, dressed in purple, handing over a scroll with Privilegia written on it to Reparatus, under the gaze of other churchmen, with and without haloes. This mosaic is a bit less graceful than the others, partly because it has undergone many interventions over time. Mariangelo Fiacchi, a librarian of the Classe monastery, complained in 1721 that “fanatical believers were hitting the mosaic with canes and sticks”. They would drop the tesserae and preserve them as small holy stones!
