Giornate FAI d’Autunno – Una spirale di sassi e vetri. Il pavimento della Manica Lunga

Maria Grazia Brunetti‘s modern mosaic floor is located in the Hall of Eight Pillars, now known as the Manica Lunga Exhibition Hall. An architectural masterpiece of the 20th century, designed by architect Marco Dezzi Bardeschi, it is located in the Classense Library, formerly the Camaldolese monastery of Classe within the city walls. The mosaic floor was created by Maria Grazia Brunetti, mosaic artist and mosaic teacher. Attracted by the age of the place and the “unfinished” nature of the space, she worked with the architect to define the idea through an experimental and creative “construction site” experience inspired by ancient methods. The floor, inspired by classical myths and esoteric humanistic thought, made with river pebbles and recycled materials, very dear to the artist, is the first example of mosaic used as street furniture in Ravenna. We can trace patterns of constellations and zodiac signs, culminating in a representation of Leon Battista Alberti’s winged eye.
